Petcoke as Feedstock to Make Ammonia

Would result cost-effective to use petcoke as a feedstock to produce ammonia having to import this raw material far away from the country (any)

Do you have a process to propose? Off hand, since ammonia is NH3, that is 3 parts hydrogen and 1 part nitrogen, and petroleum coke is mostly carbon, I don't see where this works out - sounds a lot like making gold from lead. Or are you proposing the coke just as a fuel source (not the same as feedstock)?

That was an interesting paper Lynn but I am with bigg on the impracticability of petcocke which is only listed in the 'other petroleum' and I suspect is not a big part of that sector.

Its too long since I worked on this but

Hydrogen for the Haber-Bosch process is generated by steam cracking the hydrocarbon to produce CO and H2. Air is added to consume any uncracked HC and shift the CO to CO2

The gas stream is then N2 (from air) H2, CO2 and H2O the water and CO2 are removed leaving syn gas H2 and N2

Plants were originally designed using Naptha as this was cheap easy to transport etc. In the 70s as oil prices went through the roof this became less popular and nat gas was used. Nat gas has the obvious advantage that there is much more H2 relative to the C in the molecule and so less CO2 to be removed from the syn gas

Cokes are the other end of the scale with very low H content so they would only be viable if the feedstock was free and power was essentially free too and there would still be an issue with the large stripping facility to remove the CO2. And of course emitting all this CO2 will cause issues for your greenhouse gas costs

Its comon to build urea plants as these take the ammonia and the CO2 byproduct to produce a solid pellet fertiliser which is easier to handle but the urea process is fiendishly complex as I recall and only available on licence.
