Safe Use Of Steel Plates For Mobile Machinery In Construction Sites

04/10/2013 5:02 AM

Hi,

In civil engineering worksites, it is not uncommon to place steel plates over earth and sloping grounds for mobile machinery to travel over. Has there been any incident of mobile equipment with steel undercarriage (eg crawler cranes or jack-in piling rigs with steel slippers) slipping when travelling over the steel plates? Is there any good and reasonable control measures to prevent such incidents from happening? Thanks in advance.

As a designer of temporary works, you need to risk assess just like you would for permanent works. You have done this by questioning the proposal of use of steel plates on slopes, now you need to mitigate and reduce the risk.

If you are working on sloping ground, surely friction is a factor to consider to reduce the likelihood of slippage? Why not consider using timber mats? Or consider using plant with rubber tracks?
