Ferrite determination

05/30/2007 8:25 AM

Dear all,

I have to carry out a welding procedure qualification test on duplex stailess steel. It is required to determine the ferrite number of weld metal. As I know it can be done by metallographic methode or using special magnetic equipment. The question is 'can we determine FN through chemical content by using WRC 1992 diagram and what is its accuracy?'

Thank you very much for your comments.

It is doubtful to calculate ferrite number using chemistry. Using the phase diagrams for the grade may be helpful if any research has been done to analyse the final weldment. Final answer would be purely theoretical.

However, cooling rate, heat input etc all affect the final results. I would suggest SEM is the best way.

Cheers

Yes, Reference ASM Metals Handbook Vol 6 Welding and Brazing. Schaeffler or DeLong Diagram. Schaeffler diagram predicts within 4%.
