Bronze Age Boat Not Up to Snuff

09/12/2005 11:16 AM

An experiment to show that a Bronze Age boat made of reeds and tar could make a trip to India took on water and sank after just 30 minutes into a 600 mile journey.

From LiveScience.com: "The rim was not waterproof up to the top and the boat's bitumen amalgam coating finished 30 centimeters (12 inches) below the rim," said Maurizio Tosi of the University of Bologna, which was behind the project when it started in 1999."
Sad to see that the trip could not be made, but I'm sure they will try again.
