CO2 sealed glass-tube laser

05/30/2007 12:21 PM

Hello,

Has someone experience (know-how) what optics are used in 100W glass-tube-type sealed CO2 laser? What is the technique to charge and seal that tube with gas?

CO2 lasers typically use ZnS lens because the IR light is around 2.94μm. If you've seen a sealed-tube glass laser, you'd know that they're rather a neat bit of scientific glass blowing. Everything is built, then a water jacket is built around that. The air is pulled out of the tube, a small amount of CO2 is allowed in, then the glass pipes are heated and pinched off.

If you want to see some very nice CO2 lasers, go to eBay and search on "CO2 laser."

Working with lasers for a long time I used to believe that CO2 main lines are in 9.6 and 10.6 um regions. I also believe that the material is rather ZnSe. Can I really buy a 2.94 um CO2 laser on eBay?

You are correct about the optics ZnSe, I was being sloppy. Also, search "CO2 laser" on eBay and see what comes up. And I'm pretty certain 2.94 um .
