Its over. The ESA Herschel Herschel Space Observatory runs out of coolant and will be rendered disfunctional by heat.

What i don't understand is why the cooling system was not a closed circuit, or did it spring a leak?

According to the information it was a planned event, so my guess is it was a open system. Evaporation cooling???

Maybe just leaks that you can not prevent from happening!

Yes, as I recall the SIRTF, then the Webb telescope are the followups.

The Herschel's cooling was indeed an exercise in simplicity. Open, low pressure, for lowest possible temperature. No moving parts, no vibrations, no electrical consumption, no heating. Real K.I.S.S. solution. I am impressed, that it lasted this long.

The Webb telescope is IR.
