This one explains how to get Windows 8 on while running Windows 7, rather than the reverse. To my mind the best solution is an independent partitioning and booting software. I am now happily Macintoshed and run all sorts of operating systems through VMware, but in my abandoned Windows days I used and could recommend Paragon software, as at
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/features.html

which offers the complete package for first partitioning and then setting up a dual boot. Free solutions are also available, but this is one function I would much rather pay for.

That is what I was trying to explain. You start with a computer running Windows 8. You install partitioning and dual-boot software. In a second partition you install Windows 7 (there is no way of using a Windows 8 licence - you have to obtain a separate copy of Windows 7). You now have a machine with both Windows 8 and windows 7. "Degrading" the existing operating system is not an option.
If it's all done correctly, the computer starts up with a menu choice, so you decide which system you boot into.

I hope SE's reference gets you there. My computer support group bought a laptop with triple boot--Windows 7 and 8 plus Ubuntu. The dealer had a terrible time getting it to work. I think it ended up that you have to boot to W8, then can get to W7, but getting to W7 isn't all that easy.

Who would want windows 8????

Windows 7, with VMware and then you can run all your old leagacy software on the VM without worry. Its great for software testing also.

Why bother installing Windows 7 at all?

Install download.cnet.com/Classic-Shell/3000-2072_4-75553853.html

The big problem with a Windows 8 machine is EUFI secure boot. If you can

t turn it off in the BIOS then you may be SOL. It is one of the reasons those machines are not selling!

So why would anyone go beyond 7?

Windows 8 has apps you can buy, but if you want to publish - a huge royalty appears to go to Microsoft (30%??).

Can anyone enlighten us on this rumour?

Win 8 has Programs and Apps. Apps are Win 8 ONLY and Programs are the standard Windows 32 and 64 bit stuff. The Win 8 only apps are for the "metro" interface and won't work on previous versions. Microsoft installs "Apps" through their "App Store" like Apple does. That is where the royalties are going.
