Total Block of RF Signals

05/24/2013 11:55 AM

How can all radio frequencies be blocked for a secure room. Is there a film that I can use on the floor, walls and ceiling?

Copper screen/mesh is the preferred method. Or sheet metal. The only film I'd even consider is aluminum foil.

Look up Faraday cage. Faraday cage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There's a billion examples on the internet.

The size of the openings will be determined by the frequencies you want to block. Higher freq. requires smaller openings.

Lookup Tempest.

What standards do you need to build to?

Your customer's security representative is usually a good place to start. Or are you trying to get an area certified so you can get your foot in the door?

In addition to the physical security, you will also need to consider information assurance assuming you will have computer systems within your SCIF. You will have to go through the DIACAP process per DoD Instruction 8510.01 to accredit your information processing systems.

Here's a good intro into what a Sensitive Compartmentalized Information Facility is all about. It's a lot more than just a Faraday Cage and Tempest-ing, follow the links above and in the article.

Yes,

There's much more to it than meets the eye.

Worked in a TEMPEST facility and couldn't believe the steps taken, not the least of which was a loudspeaker placed directly beside EVERY AC duct and vent in every room, constantly playing music so conversations could not be surreptitiously recorded.

Some of the security procedures we were required to use made me chuckle.

Total elimination of radio frequency interferences is almost impossible, but by building a Faraday cage you might reduce it to a minimum.

Kudos to Lyn.

Put the antenna in a chip bag or cover it all with aluminum foil.
