Re: Google Earth Operations

Hi Friends,

Is Google Earth still operating on Linux-based systems ? I currently run 3 different versions of Linux on my 2 desktops and one laptop and I have been a frequent GE user. Recently, Google Earth will not recognize the places I enter in the "Find" or search box space, but rather it returns an error: Invalid http request every time. However, when I click on a previously saved location in the "Places" file, it finds that location directly. I keep wondering if I only am having this problem or is something bigger going on.

I sometimes think that GE has used their web search engine for locations - and will give responses from the most popular destinations around the world rather than something obscure just round the corner from the user's location.

I recently searched for a restaurant in the next town, and was diverted to a place in southern Asia!(It did have good reviews, but was a little too far to cycle that evening)

Google Earth quit working for me last week. I couldn't find anything wrong -- it just wouldn't load properly most of the time, and, when it did load, nothing would work.

I uninstalled the whole package (That took several minutes, which seemed like quite a long time!) and started over with a fresh download. Everything is back to normal.

Just so you know, ALL of Google's in-house work is done with Ubuntu Linux. ALL Google servers are Linux, and Windows is not allowed on the internal company network. So, if a Google app is not working in Linux, then it is not the Linux that is at fault.

Any Linux application can become broken from updates that do not have complete dependency lists. The fix that usually works is complete uninstall and then re-install the app that is broken.
