Lead Angle for a Scroll Winch

08/03/2013 7:32 AM

I am designing a system which includes a scroll winch to wrap up a 3 inch rope, and there is a maximum lead-in angle for a scroll with no mechanical spreading gear. I have a figure in my memory! can anyone confirm it for me? Gerry D

Thanks Lyn. If you are right, it will make life a lot easier. But how did you know the figure in my memory? Gerry D.

I have a figure in my mind, but without knowing the figure in you're mind I can't confirm anything.

Yes Tony, you could confirm, or refute it. You're into semantics, I'm not. All you have to do is give me the figure if you know it, if it is the same as mine you have confirmed it, if it is different I will have to read up. Thank you for going to the trouble of replying though. Gerry D.

Ask a logger or a fisherman or, as a last resort !!!, ask your rope supplier. He is the logical one to ask as he has expert knowledge or, if not, he has access to it from the manufacturers.

Sensible answer Oraka. I am a fisherman, but a lazy one, I'm afraid. I have already asked a logger friend and he says they don't use scrolls. I read it up years ago and may have to again, but the forum seemed an easier way. Thank you for taking the trouble to answer . Gerry D.

Gerry, I am a fisherman too. But the fishermen I was meaning are the professional ones who haul trawls every day. And if they damage a wire cable by not feeding it onto the winch drum correctly it costs big $$. Likewise with loggers. If they are operating a skyline hauler, they must feed their cables correctly onto the hauler drums or they will soon go belly up.

Orako, I am certified as "Skipper (Full)" ie, I can skipper any size of fishing boat, anywhere in the world. Went to sea with my dad as cabin-boy at 15 and retired at 75. Wrung a lot of seawater out of my socks! Thanks for your intelligent and astute suggestion. Good fishing Gerry.D.

I googled, "scroll winch" and the only direct hit was this thread. Point the way to a picture please.

Thank you Passingtongreen, but I will do as Oraka advises and email the rope manufacturer. Thank you for the offer of help nevertheless. Gerry D.
