Exercise Effectiveness

08/08/2013 6:09 PM

Many moons ago (or was it 28 days) there was a discussion at CR4 on doping for athletic achievement. (I believe it was during that brief window that Floyd Landis held the Tour De France winning title but was only accused of cheating.) In that discussion I proposed that one day genetic testing may become a part of this sad story of athletics and cheating. Well this week on NPR's Fresh Air I heard such a story. It seems that they cannot yet identify an "athlete" gene but they can identify in the genetic code if training will improve an individuals performance and degree of fitness.

So, does this mean that those of us who sit around all day at work and then go home, sit at the PC and drink beer may have no reason to feel guilty about not "training"?

Well it seems to me that eventually the gene pool will become so similar that manipulation of genetic traits will become necessary to ensure continued healthy offspring....I mean that's the whole deal with incest right, other than the moral implications of course....so it just stands to reason that designer babies will become a reality and the design will have to be approved by some official governing body.....and I might add that individuals with mechanical implants, will become commonplace, and will have to be allowed to compete on some level....the conversation will be similar to doping in today's time.....an unfair advantage.....So what is an unfair advantage? I consider everybody bigger than me, and in better physical shape, to have an unfair advantage...unless I'm allowed to use some sort of equalizer....

Are you saying that eventually our descendants will all become GMO's?

Unless we discover an alien civilization from another planet that can mate with humans....then yes.... We've had this discussion on here before that at some point the human race becomes genetically self-determined....survival of the fittest is no longer relevant to humans...survival of the race is now the paradigm....

To me, the opposite holds. It depends on the mix of genes and the modification of mutations; only a few mutations out of millions are helpful but the genetic diversity continues to increase. Looking back, there were fewer people than now so you would expect only their genetic contribution to be in the present population if there were no additions and changes.

Back to the OP, there has long been evidence that "It is in the genes". My wife looked after herself and died of cancer, I did the opposite and I'm still here, there are many cases that show that "it's in the genes"!

I agree.

I am in my fifties and have never been in the hospital (except birth, of course) and don't have any issues. No high blood pressure, no cholesterol, nothing. And I have done everything wrong for the last 10 years.

Regarding doping, I say let them do it. What is the difference between doping and finding a new offensive football format that works against a conventional defense?

Won't everyone eventually catch on? What is cheating anyway?

It all smells like a way to make money from fines levied on pro athletes to me.
