Killing Gmail Folders

08/19/2013 11:59 PM

How do you delete a folder on Gmail?

I know I can delete email messages from folders, but I want to get rid of the folders themselves. I'll settle for renaming them, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

You can delete them. The reason you can't figure out how is because they're called labels in Gmail, not folders.

  1. Go to Settings by clicking on the gear in the upper right and clicking Settings.
  2. Click Labels (second tab from the left).
  3. Scroll down to Labels and click Remove for any labels/folders you want to delete. (The Remove link is in the fourth column, under Actions.)
  4. If you prefer, you can also rename from this page.

Thank you! I NEVER would have figured that out myself.

Hooray! Another Tom Lehrer fan!

Thank you Savvy Exacta! My folders/labels haven't become burdensome yet, but now they never will.

This is why I have not embraced gmail. I have no need to learn how to use a square wheel. I also had great difficulty proving I was a human neither I nor my kids could guess the letter combo because the letters were so smooshed. I prefer proving I am a human by clicking the different picture. 2 examples 5 sports cars and a station wagon, 5 herbavors and a lion.

Hey, here's another question: Where do my deleted emails go? Every once in a while I'd like to recapture an email I deleted, but they are GONE. Gmail doesn't seem to have a Deleted folder.

I don't mind having to clean out a Deleted folder once in a whiile (now that I know how).

Which folder originally contained the deleted message? Things deleted from Spam are gone forever. Other emails should go to your Trash. They only stay there for 30 days and then they're permanently deleted.

If you want to remove something from your Inbox but don't want to delete it, hit the Archive button. It'll go to your All Mail folder.

One of my favorite features of Gmail is the search function. It's a really easy way to find any email. You only need to enter part of a sender's name or phrase/word that the email contained.

Thanks again!

I was wondering where my Trash file was--it was Hidden.

As you might know, they are deleted for you but are kept by google forever.
