Technical Project Writing About Mechanical Design

06/04/2007 2:32 AM

I would like to know how data of a technical mechanical design can be collected and how to analyse them leading to manufacture a prototype.

You would need to be more specific as to what data you are interested in, as this would assist in identifying the parameters you would need to measure and thereafter evaluate.

For example: if you were trying to punt a superior steel for its corrosion resistance, you would collect data on metal loss vs time vs concentration of corrosive media...

currently iam designing cashew nut roasting machine, so i have to collect data and to analyse them, chosing the best alternative finaly manufacturing a prototype.

the problem is what type of data should i collect and how to analyse them

Before deciding on any particular design concept I would want to be familiar with the entire process particularly the flow of the product into and out of the roasting machine. Does the product arrive by truck, conveyor system, front loader, manually or other. How is it removed from the roaster and transported to the next step in the process. Can the roaster be open ended with flow of product going through or is the product stationary until completion of the process. All of these things, and probably more, will affect the overall success of your design within the total process. If done poorly it can impede the process or on the other hand the shining star.

Another example: if you were trying to design a pressure vessel,

1st. You have to nominate an international code/Handbook to fellow its design rules.

2nd. You have to select the proper material, so you have to collect a data on metal loss vs time vs concentration of corrosive media taking into consideration the proposed life time of the vessel.

3rd. You have to collect data about the mechanical properties of material to withstand stresses due to internal/external pressure and temperature, ... etc.

4th. For manufacturing and inspection, you have to collect a data from the international codes and standards/Handbooks to select the proper welding procedure(s), filler metals, and standard inspection rules.

Sounds like you are analyzing options. Collect data about similar options or components and compare to determine or justify a selection. The data collected will vary and is dependant on the application and environment the component will endure, also considerations of life expectancy, failure probabilities, cost, ease of operation (needs), ease maintenance (needs), and other consideration.
