Need EarthLink Help - Part 2

08/24/2013 5:31 PM

I previously posted a question about EarthLink, got good answers, and now I'm at Stage 2.

The problem, in a nutshell, is that my wife's old XP computer crashed with 10 years' worth of EarthLink emails stored on the hard drive. We salvaged the hard drive, put it in a kit, and connected it to the new Windows 7 laptop via USB. Thanks to the wizards on CR4, they told me how to find the EarthLink files. On to the next question:

What do I do now?

Here's a partial list of what files and folders I found:

EarthLink Program files

EarthLink-Connection.jpi

EarthLinkTotalAccess

EarthLink Mailbox (3 separate ones)

Elnkmail

...and hundreds more

If I click on any of them, I get this message:

The program can't start because MFC71.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

1. How do I get EarthLink on a Windows 7 laptop to access these files? We're still waiting for EarthLink to mail us Windows 7 software, and it will probably arrive from India any week now.

2. Can EarthLink webmail access files on a hard drive?

3. We have an ancient PC in a closet that has EarthLink software installed. Do you think if I resurrected it, that PC would be able to see the folders (the hard drive is portable, but I don't know if the ancient PC has a USB connection)

4. If I can't get EarthLink to access the folders, is there any way to convert them to something we can read? Like a text, Word or Word Perfect doc?

Rich

Thanks, but that didn't work. First, it scanned my brand new laptop for registry errors, told me I had hundreds of them, but they would fix it if I bought the software. Then they told me they couldn't download the DLL. Sure hope they didn't screw up my computer or insert a virus.

How can a brand-new laptop have so many registry errors?

Well out of the box it probably wouldn't, but as you have been trying to install different software programs, and added a second hard drive, there could be several....You should have a registry mechanic installed for regular maintenance, if you don't there are several free ones available....

Do you have Earthlink software now installed in win 7??

The DLL file you are missing is almost certainly still on your old hard drive. When you find it, copy it to the Windows DLL collection folder, probably C:\windows\system32.

Were you using it through a browser like IE or firefox? Or were you using Outlook or Thunderbird? Or were you using a proprietary "Earthlink" application?

If you were using a browser, then Earthlink still has all the data.

If you were using Outlook, then it is in an Outlook file hidden in your old "My Documents" folder.

If you were using Thunderbird, then it is in the Tunderbird directory hidden in a similar location as outlook, BUT, is readable in notepad and can be imported into the new system easily.

If it was a proprietary "Earthlink" application, then you need to contact Earthlink tech support.

They are all in a folder called "Earthlink" in a protected area of the hard drive. Problem is, I can't open any of them.

Eathlink support told me that Earthlink on Windows 7 can't access those old files--what I have to do is use an Earthlink export utility that will put them into a format where Windows Live can read them. They gave me a link to the export tool. I loaded and ran it, but it still can't access the files.

I'll contact EarthLink support again, and tell them the problem.

Meanwhile, we're going to load the 10-year-old Earthlink software on another XP computer we have, and try to read the hard drive from there.

SOP,

I think the process you are going to need to follow is a little more complicated than you are hoping. I suppose there is a chance that the EarthLink exporter will be able to access the "mailbox" files on an external drive, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

For sure, the folks at EarthLink are going to be your best resource, if you can get a good support person.

Here's is what I was thinking was going to be the process to get to the old "mailbox".

1. Get access to the old computer's EarthLink mail folders (completed).

2. Figure out which files actually contain the email messages/address book, etc. Hopefully, EarthLink can help out with this, or possibly a Google search.

3. Get a compatible version of the EarthLink email client running on another PC. This may mean that running it on a Win7 machine is not going to work, if it's a newer version of the software, because it may not be able to recognize the files from step 2 above.

4. On the computer running a compatible version of the EarthLink software, replace the files that make up the "mailbox", with the files from the old PC, as discovered in step 2 above. Be sure the EarthLink software is not running when you do this, because it will prevent you from overwriting the mailbox files if it is.

5. Run the Earthlink software, and go to Mail, the message should all be there. At this point, you can look at a way to export the messages.

It would be nice if there's an easier way to do this, but if not, this process should always work, provided the version of the EarthLink software recognizes the "mailbox" files from the old computer. I've used this process to "move" my Outlook Express email to a new computer, at least a few times. In that program, each "folder" in the email reader is represented by two files, one that actually holds the messages, and another one that is the index to those message. Sometimes, the hardest part of this process is determining what files you need from the old computer drive.

Good luck!

Tom D.

I hope you have backed up the old hard drive by now. Old hard drives that have been handled that are ten years old have a tendency to crash unexpectedly the moment you need to pull a file.

On the note of ten years worth of emails, Check the file sizes in the folder and sub folders, it has to be the largest file.

I was planning to write the Earthlink folder to a flash drive, but you have just spurred me to go down there and do so. Thanks.

You could download VirtualBox, then clone the XP disk into that. You would then have access to all the XP programs, files and folders just as it was before the MB went pop. Even those not compatible with W7.

Finally got an error message from Gmail:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its recipients after more than 24 hours on the queue on host164.abcsolve.com.

The message identifier is: 1VEteh-0005Ms-W2

The date of the message is: Thu, 29 Aug 2013 00:16:24 -0400

The subject of the message is: Re: test

The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is: (My email address)

Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: host ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.com [173.194.75.27]: 421-4.7.0 [206.212.245.164 10]

Our system has detected an unusual rate of 421-4.7.0 unsolicited mail originating from your IP address. To protect our 421-4.7.0 users from spam, mail sent from your IP address has been temporarily 421-4.7.0 blocked. Please visit http://www.google.com/mail/help/bulk_mail.html 421 4.7.0 to review our Bulk Email Senders Guidelines.

l8si9208410vez.10 - gsmtp No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

So I went to the link they suggest above, and all it does is take me in circles. It does not explain how to solve the problem.

What's REALLY WEIRD is I can get a message through if I BCC my Gmail address. In other words, I can't send a message directly, but if I send a message to somebody else and BCC my Gmail, it goes through.

Is there any way I can communicate directly with Gmail to solve this problem?

Rich

Depending on how important those files are, you may want to consider taking your new machine and old hard drive to the Geek Squad, found in most Best Buy stores.

I had an old XP machine die, and couldn't reach anything on the HD. They fixed me up for about $100, which was worth it. They created a new file on my new machine, and transferred the old files into it; they can probably change your old emails into a readable format too...they did mine.

You are using Earthlink, but getting SMTP errors from Gmail? Why is your program using gmail smtp servers instead of the Earthlink servers? ALL of your outgoing email will appear to be "unsolicited" to gmail because they are not originating from a gmail sender account.

You need to setup your Earthlink account to send and recieve through Earthlink. If you still recieve messages from gmail, then you may have a spam-bot infection on one or more of the machines on your home network.

Well that error from gmail means you have a spambot on your network anyway. Better get it cleaned up!

I wish I knew how. Gmail and Google offer no help at all. I'm a litte PR agency, and I send out one or two press releases a month. I send them to only 10 editors at a time to avoid the spam checkers. But Google/Gmail decided that this is spam and blocked me.

They are not blocking you for the 10 you know you sent. They are blocking you for the hundreds of messages you don't know you sent. Your machine is infected or one of your machines is infected.

You need to have someone who knows how to find and remove root-kits, bots, and backdoors from your system clean up your machines. I usually boot a live Linux CD and start by deleting all the contents of all the \temp directories and then run a virus scan from Linux on the Windows partition. Then, I download the antivirus tools I will need for Windows using Linux and I put the downloads into the root of the Windows partition. Then, I reboot back into Windows, and run the utilities I downloaded and scan windows from windows with the network disconnected. After that scan, I shutdown (off), and then boot up again with the network connected. I download the updates to the scanners, and scan again.

I use Malwarebytes and Avast from Windows, and I use Comodo from Linux.
