2000 Chevy Cavalier

08/25/2013 12:41 PM

Last night we were coming home and our car wouldn't gain speed upon take off. As long as it is on a straight a way its fine. Today it wont start at all. Any comments are appreciated.

Cavaliers are notorious pieces of junk.

The symptoms you describe could be caused by dozens of problems.

Fuel, air, spark may all have a part in loss of power.

Is it out of gas?

That was the first thing we thought of too, luckily there was a gas station and we put gas in it. The air hasn't worked in some time.

No, I mean it takes 3 things to make a car run. Fuel supply, air to mix with fuel and spark to ignite the mixture.

Not talking about AC.

Could be a sensor, too. Crankshaft sensor, throttle position sensor, oil pressure sensor, the list goes on and on.

Would it make a difference if NO warning lights came on? We haven't tried to boost it off yet, but as soon as someone gets here we will. Could it have "jumped time"? We turned it off at the gas station and it started back without any trouble until today

Possible. The timing belt should be replaced every 90K miles, or so.

Maybe your alternator died and the warning light didn't come on.

Sounds like a plugged fuel filter. When was it changed last? Easy check, spray starting fluid in the air cleaner, If the engine starts and dies, it is a fuel problem. You can also check pressure at the fuel rail. If it is not fuel, decide how much the car is worth versus the cost of hiring a mechanic. Even the cost of a fuel pump may be more than the car is worth. My fuel pump died with no notice at all.

Now I see the other car.

Why doesn't the car turn over? Why should the battery be dead? This condition needs to be corrected before anything else.

After the engine will turn over at normal speed, try pulling the spark plugs and checking for compression. If that is not within the ability chart, leave the plugs in, and use your hand to block all air from entering the engine. Have an assistant hold the throttle down while turning the key to the start position. Vacuum and compression are different measurments of the same function. If you have good suction, you will have sufficient compression to make the engine run.

If it passes this test, check for spark at the spark plugs. pull the plugs if they are not already out, make sure the threaded portion is grounged, and the plug wire is connected. Again have an assistant turn the key to the start position. You should be able to see a bright blue-white spark from the center electrode.

If you pass this test also, post, and let me know. And don't buy any shady parts from Lyn-Door industries.
