By my memory (you need to verify), ASME VIII is silent on whether radiography is carried out before or after PWHT. Obviously it is usually done beforehand to ensure non-compliant welds are not PWHT and then found to need repair. However, due to the possibility of previously compliant defects, eg inclusions, moving or growing during PWHT, some purchasers specify RT both before and after PWHT. I know i have when working in that sort of role.

If this was agreed/required at time of purchase, then it should be specifiied in the approved ITP (Inspection & Test Plan), assuming it is a purchaser requirement over and above code. If not, sounds like a scope change.

As an aside, you state thickness is 18mm, i recall ASME VIII requires PWHT only from 19mm (3/4") & thicker? Thus sounding even more like purchaser requirements - good practice, but in excess of code?

Radiography can be performed either before or after PWHT when following ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 or 2. There hasn't been any sequence specified.

However, you may need to look into the specifications of the job you are performing. Moreover, ASME B31.3 asks for radiography after PWHT for certain materials prone to carcking /defects after going through post weld heat treatment.

Hello, 19mm for CS. He has low alloy material P4. RT before PWHT is only for your health. RT before PWHT is non-mandatory. After is Mandatory. Both are a practice. Review ASME VIII edition 2010 UW/10, UW11 and UW40.

PWHT

1.- By Thickness

2.- By Material

3.- By Fluid
