252Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic
Wheel base: 109in

Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Export, right-hand drive (RHD)

Good man..! Actually I've always thought it was around 1964, now I know it has to be between 1962 & 1972, and it certainly must be early 60's. I bought the vehicle in Perth in 1971, and it certainly wasn't anywhere near new, indeed it had had a hard life, there was a gear buggered in the gearbox, all the steering knuckles were badly worn, and the previous owner , had mounted the bodywork off a Kombi van on top..! I paid 650 quid for it. I bought it to get my wife, daughter, and myself, to Townsville. It was a great trip despite breaking two front springs etc. The grill consists of straight wires as opposed to the mesh grill one see's on the series 2. Thanks for the help, Norm.

Sure thing.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looked to me like they only used the "D" at the end, from April 1967 to March 1968.

Or maybe not...

This might help nail it down.

It would appear from the info you have provided, and assuming that the chassis number is the same as the vehicle number, that the build date is 1967 approx. But it's condition when I bought it, 1971, belies that fact...?? Unless the previous owner flogged it un mercilessly....! I changed the chassis some years ago, due to salt damage of the original. Thanks guys for your help. Norm.

Your query got me interested in the history of the Land Rover, and I watched a couple of youtube documentaries, which were pretty cool.

Those things were built to be flogged. Flogging them and attempting to kill them was a hobby.

OK guys, This is the good oil. I went to a crowd in the UK, and they came up with the date, 12 th. May, 1967. So we weren't too far out. As I've said before I can't believe it was only 4 years old when I bought it, all th ball joints knackered, probs with the gearbox, etc. Anyway lads, thanks again for your help and advice. Norm.

Just curious.

How were they able to nail it down to the exact day?

The crowd I contacted was the, " The Motor Heritage Centre". Apparently they have listings on almost every vehicle built in the UK. In terms of the "D" suffix, that does place it within that time frame, but what I have trouble in coming to terms with is that I bought the vehicle in 1971 which would make it only 4 years old.as I've said before, It's condition was woeful, it must have led a very strenuous life. The engine was clapped out, there was a rattle in the gear box which proved to be a broken gear tooth, the steering joints were buggered And the chassis was just about shot..! Despite all that we were able to drive from Perth to Townsville in Queensland, without major incident, apart from the two broken front springs. Anyway it goes to the ruggedness of the old rover.

I'd like to see some pictures when you get it done and on the road.
