GMail Thinks I'm a Spammer

08/30/2013 11:10 AM

I'm a little PR agency. I send out one or two press releases a month to about 100 to 200 addresses, carefully sent 10 addresses at a time.

I don't send to all 200 addresses in one email.

I don't send from Gmail. I use another email address.

Google decided I'm a spammer. Now I am blocked from all Gmail addresses--even my own!
How do I fix this? The "help" link at Gmail is no help at all.

Here's the error message from Gmail:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its recipients after more than 24 hours on the queue on host164.abcsolve.com.

The message identifier is: 1VEteh-0005Ms-W2

The date of the message is: Thu, 29 Aug 2013 00:16:24 -0400

The subject of the message is: Re: test

The address to which the message has not yet been delivered is: (My Gmail email address)

Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data: host ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.com [173.194.75.27]: 421-4.7.0 [206.212.245.164 10]

Our system has detected an unusual rate of 421-4.7.0 unsolicited mail originating from your IP address. To protect our 421-4.7.0 users from spam, mail sent from your IP address has been temporarily 421-4.7.0 blocked. Please visit http://www.google.com/mail/help/bulk_mail.html 421 4.7.0 to review our Bulk Email Senders Guidelines.

l8si9208410vez.10 - gsmtp No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.

So I went to the link they suggest above, and all it does is take me in circles. It does not explain how to solve the problem.

What's REALLY WEIRD is I can get a message through if I BCC my Gmail address. In other words, I can't send a message directly, but if I send a message to somebody else and BCC my Gmail, it goes through. Takes a long time, though--about 30 minutes.

Is there any way I can communicate directly with Gmail to solve this problem?

Rich

Thousands of other PR agencies do exactly the same as me. That's how all that stuff gets into trade magazines and on web sites like GlobalSpec.

I used to send them out in bigger bunches, but other spam blockers rejected me. I was able to explain to them that I'm a PR agency, and they unblocked me. I can't explain this to Gmail because there's no way to do so.

Now I send my releases out to 10 editors at a time, which escapes the attention of all the rest of the spam blockers--except Google/Gmail.

Unplug your rooter from mains for a min or so to change to another IP address. This does not apply if you have a static IP. S.M.

No Gmail didn't. The people that you have been sending these press releases did. Enough of these people have most likely blocked or listed it as spam in their mailboxes that Gmail has blocked it.

PErhaps you could be proactive in future by adding a line to your sendouts :

" if you consider this email SPAM then reply to us with the title SPAM and we will

remove your address from our send-out list. "

You may be disappointed with the number of replies you get, but it will tell you

something about your targets' opinions of your content.

It will also streamline your sendouts. Not like its wasting paper, but others' time.

I've been sending press releases to the same bunch of automation and process control magazines all over the world for years. I even know many of the editors personally from supplying them with tech articles, app stories and white papers (well, as close as you can get via the web).

For them to suddenly class me as spam is unrealistic. If I send a release to a magazine that has no use for it, I'll get an email from the editor, so I am real careful about what releases I send where. I don't "broadcast" a release to the whole magazine world--just those that I think would be interested.

When I was an editor not so long ago, I never reported anybody as spam, even when I got crap in the mail.

No, I don't think the recipients are classifying me as spam. Maybe their spam checker software is, but I usually get notified when that happens. The best two responses so far are unplug the router to change the IP address, and scan my computer for a virus (did that, nothing there).

It just might be worth it to get a paid email provider, instead of Gmail.

The key question is what does Google think the sending IP address is? If you have an email server withtin your PR business, such as Microsoft Exchange, then the email would likely be sent from your IP address at your business. However, if you send email to your ISP's mail servers and they relay it on to the target destination, then Google will identify their mail server IP address as the sending address and it may be this that is being blocked.

How do you do that?

I would if I could.

If you break down the error message you can see that the error has been generated by your ISP's mail server host164.abcsolve.com. It is saying that it gets a rejection fro Google's email server on IP address 173.194.75.27 saying that it won't accept mail from host164.abcsolve.com as it has been identified as a source of spam. I don't think this is anything to do with your individual mail or anything local to your business. I would try a test to see if you can send to Gmail directly. Change your SMTP settings in your email client to 173.194.75.27 and send a test mail to your Gmail address. This will send a mail directly to Google bypassing your ISP's mail servers. This can only be used as a test as you will only be able to send mail to Gmail addresses. Let me know what happens.

Beyona:

Thanks!! That worked exactly like you described.

However, for some unknown reason, all of a sudden I can send messages to my Gmail address from my other email, too.

So one of two things happened:

1. Sending directly to Gmail somehow cleared the spam logjam

2. My Email provider (ABCSOLVE) was aware of the problem and fixed it last night. Maybe, like you said, other subscribers complained to the provider because they were banned, too.

Now I don't have to send a (Gasp!) LETTER to Google. Imagine that...sending a snail mail letter all the way across the country to a web site! What will they think of next?

Thanks to everybody that replied.

I think that the most likely scenario is that other users on abcsolve have spammed Gmail users and got the mail server at abcsolve blacklisted by Google. If this happens to you again I would seriously consider changing mail providers. This wouldn't mean you had to change ISP but simply move your mail services elsewhere.
