Diesel Dwell Time 4 Hours

10/21/2013 7:05 AM

This is my first post.

API 650 7.2.4(d) talk about high flash point penetrating oil test (Non Destructive Test) of shell to bottom welds in storage tanks constructed in accordance with API 650.

Will diesel evaporate with in couple of hours or diesel can stay inside the weld discontinuity after 4 hours? I am bit confused! I would like to know your opinion. If anyone has real experience, pls share.

This depends on temperature.

The flash point of diesel is between 126 and 205 °F in a normal atmosphere. (Wikipedia)

I my experience, diesel will stay on an exposed surface for several days. Most of the more volatile aspects will boil away after an hour or so, but the heavier constituent oil will remain for a considerable amount of time.

Trust the code.

Sorry, most of my work is in ASME. "Trust the code." is something I tell the folks I work with. In your case, and in the case of API, I should have said, "Follow the Standard, unless needs dictate a deviation."
