Difference Between Knee Point and Saturation Point of CT

10/27/2013 1:14 PM

Dear Friends,

When i test knee point of CT, I get the Knee point is 10% increase in applied secondary voltage which results in 50% increase in excitation current. I know this but in magnetisation curve of CT, Knee Point is the Saturation Point of CT, then why the CT doesn't go for saturation after test the knee point voltage test. what is the difference between knee point and Saturation Point? when test for knee point voltage, if there is any possibility for CT saturation?

Knee point tends to bring tears to the eyes.

Saturation point is when I fall over at the bar.

Ask a reasonable question you may get something in the way of a reply.

Elbow point is when I'm still still leaning on the bar.

Re-read Wikipedia and read it more carefully this time. It will help you with your homework. It clearly explains Saturation and Knee point, where you got the info from previously.

Alternately, I will put another question to you. When a CT is in service, definitely, it must repeatedly see fault currents much beyond its accuracy limit primary current or even saturation current. Have you ever wondered why then the CT is not driven to saturation.

Think & if you get an answer to this question, you will get answer to your question.

And this is the saturation point.

it is not parmanent saturation. saturation means winding cannot oppose current flow linearly beyond saturation. while the ct put into power ckt then for high pri current secondary of ct can not produce necessary flux or voltage to drive current in metering or protection ckt.
