Structure Requirements of a Battle Room in Space

10/30/2013 9:16 AM

I haven't seen the movie yet but I read the book "Ender's Game" and was wondering about how a space station, with a sizable cube in the center maintained at null gravity was built. Then it occurred to me that the skin of such a place would be in tension like a balloon.

How much of Earth would have to survive an innitial alien attack to put such a training facility in space?

The resources to build it or the technical knowhow? In my humble opinion, unless we got a giant leap in technology from the alien attack we would be thrust into a situation much like the movie Oblivion where the aliens pretty much take what they want and we live in caves.

The book was a good read, but the premise of an alien attacking without bring sufficient supply lines to support that attack is just silly.

As for the technical knowhow, the cube wouild probably be buried within a much larger structure otherwise it would need to be a sphere, stress would be concentrated along the sides of the cube and tear it apart. It could be built, you just need to haul enough strenght of materials up there to support it.

As for the resources, we would probably have to abandon any thought of conservation and protecting the environment. If everyone on the planet got together and combined resources it might be possible, but just about all energy on the planet would be needed to build the station then all the resources we could mine from the solar system would be needed next.

My 2 cents

An intelligent alien attack would concentrate among other things, on destroying our ability to respond. Therefore no matter what survived the initial attack, if we had lost our ability to lift materials into space then the question is pointless.

Wwell we could try the diesel powered rocket of Mr. X to surprise the aliens and still win the war! Never give up!

Where have you been ? All Alien technology is fueled by WATER......

I do not suggest giving up, only that other means of responding or resisting would need to be found, with regard to the original question.

I think the more practical method would be to build inside a large asteroid. Most of the work would be simply the hollowing out part.

After that its just a matter of sealing it up to hold air.

As far as aliens attacking us, why? We have absolutely nothing in resources that can't be found in far higher and easier to access abundances anywhere else in solar system or galaxy for that matter.

As far as coming to enslave us that's pointless too. Any alien civilization with the knowledge and technology to travel between star system will also have the ability to make AI based robotic and android servants that would be far better and more reliable than any human could ever be.

We are lazy, high maintenance, high up keep, and have a rather limited physical capacity for how many hours we can work before needing a moderate amount of time to rest. Then on top of that we like to rebel for any reason and tend to be far from loyal or trustworthy when enslaved.

Enslaving us would be about as fruitful as trying to make cats work on an assembly line.

At last, we finally find a way to identify with cats. Like it or not.

Maybe we're good to eat.

What about simple conflict? What if they just want to fight us now so we don't get stronger and become a challenger in the future?

What about real estate? We are only just now starting to find planets around other stars that could possibly be in the habitable zone. If they turn out to be rare, we could be attacked just for the real estate we live on.

We have an alien language we can't understand right here on earth....or actually, in the water. Dolphins have a language. Why wouldn't an alien language be just as difficult to understand. What if the aliens were giant cats?

Replying to tcmtech. May I recite you a story.
(as close as I can) as told, and all credits to Mr Woody Allan.

The aliens came to earth with far greater intellect, advance technology, and superior
weapons to ours. So we were powerless to resist them, and they enslaved us all.

We asked them what they wanted? They said, they wanted us to do all their dirty
washing and dry cleaning for them! Basically, we were in the "pants" business.

They left us all their dirty washing, saying, they would come back next week.

We worked hard, and it was done.

They came back to earth a week later for their washing and, the joke was on them!

They forgot their ticket, and we said they would have to come back again next week.

I used to like that joke, and hope you did. (tcm just jogged my memory.)

jt.
