Refractory Erosion Problem in Sulphur Condenser

11/13/2013 2:49 AM

Hi,

I am looking after the Maintenance of Sulphur Recovery Unit in a large refinery. We have Sulphur Condensers installed which have refractory linings inside the Channel Heads for protection against Sulphur, H2S or any other corrosive service. The Operating Temperature is merely 350 Degree C. Refractory lining is getting deteriorated after 4-6 months of operation in this service which is further choking the exchanger tubes and the piping system in the network. Though various grades of refractory have been applied earlier, the erosion problem is not yet resolved. We intend to remove this refractory lining and put up a Paint Protection Layer over the existing Carbon Steel shell.

Can anyone provide a solution in this regard or any of products suitable for such service?

The refractory lining is a consumable.

Where's the problem?

I would suggest replacing the refractory with ceramic.

There are many sources of high quality ceramic products for this application available via the internet.

I suggest you start with GlobalSpec and/or Thomas Registry to locate a reputable vendor.

Pay careful attention to the Aluminum content of the ceramic and be sure to let the vendor know all details of the fluids you are processing. (Temperature, corrosiveness, pressure, etc.)
