Proposed FUEGO Satellite Could Locate Wild-Fires in Real-Time

11/20/2013 5:55 PM

A proposed satellite by UC Berkeley would continuously scan for wildfires in North America.

This appears to be a solution looking for a problem.

We've "managed" the land into the situation we have now.

Wildfires will burn out of control for as long as the terrain is covered with fuel, and the wind blows.

I don't know that a satellite will help much.

We might agree in principle that the forestry 'assets' are not well managed - but as fires rage, I think anything constructive we can do to help reduce risk and liability till we have a better plan is a good idea. What we're doing at the moment isn't working.

If you go back in history and look at what the white European settlers did when they came to North America, you will see that how they managed the land was completely unnatural.

Where, in the past, fires came and went without major consequences, when we started to "manage" the forests and change the character of the land and the animals who lived there with unnatural fire suppression to "save" the land and what we had put on it, we set the stage for the wildfires we're seeing today.

It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.

I know, it's too late to go back, so maybe anything we do to get a head start on a fire is worthwhile.

Hopefully a satellite helping to get to the fires quicker so less damage is done, and less resources are needed per year to put them out is the first step. Then the existing budget (and manpower) can be used to better manage what we have. That's the hope.
