Future Scapes

12/02/2013 11:31 AM

When I was a kid, I used to love those PEEKS into the future, usually via Popular Science, or Popular Mechanics. Of course, predictions of the future haven't proven very accurate in total, but they're still fun to consider.

Recently, SAIC Motors "WON" a design challenge

and although I doubt any gifts or prizes were exchanged, when I looked at their "idea" it was suddenly reminiscent of the portrayal of mass transportation shown in the 2002 movie, Minority Report.

I was just wondering ... SciFi often does predict the future, but does anyone actually get the credit when said predictions are right? Or, in this case, is it correct for another entity to get the accolades for a concept for which they were not the first?

Just thinking ... comments welcome

Kind regards ...

Sci-Fi writers have long been credited with accurate predictions. H.G. Wells and Jules Verne used to be cited for their prescience quite often. Maybe they still are and I just don't pay as much attention anymore.

However, there are lots of Sci Fi "predictions" which don't come true. We don't hear much about those. Whether the source of predictions comes from Sci Fi or ESP, we are told about the successful predictions but not about the misses. (Survivor bias)

Besides, I have been told that all of these inventions were already made by N. Tesla and were suppressed by Edison.

It is one thing to imagine what might be in the future, but the credit (or the blame) must go to those who make it happen.

Airbrushed artwork is NOT a design.
