Resistor

what is the resistance of the resistor?

"HEI 9804 25W 0.0086 10P" .THESE ARE PRINTEDON THE RESISTOR SURFACE

Quick guess...

HEI (Huntington Electric Inc.)

9804 (manufactured April 1998)

25W (Watts max power rating)

0.0086 (Ohms resistance)

10P (10% tolerance)

If correct, a typical VOM (Volt Ohm Meter) will have trouble confirming the low resistance value (about the same value resistance as 1 meter of #14 AWG wire).

I guess your guess is correct. Will check later for a G.A. or not.

I had no explanation for the 9804

HEI was used, (now changed to HE) for Huntingdon Electric, Inc.

8.6 milli -Ohms (mΩ) - 8.6.10¯³ Ω

Sounds like a shunt resistor for an ammeter.

This is a very low resistance, and a good digital meter that reads in Siemens will be suitable for this measurement.

.0086 ohms +116.2790698 [S] Siemens(approx).

Hello HiTek,

I wonder if you would explain your comment. I really don't understand what you mean by the "+116.2790698" constant.

Perhaps this should be another topic for discussion, but I can't say that I agree with you about using a "good digital meter".

I only say that because I had a task of comparing some filliment coil resistance values (many years ago) and I found that I had to build a special rig.

I considered the possibility of using a milliohm meter, but it was not an option and I'm not sure I would have known how to use it.

Perhaps one of the biggest issues with low resistance readings is contact resistance. I learned that there is a whole field of science devoted to contact resistance. In any case, it is certainly not as simple as many people think.

I'm looking for an understanding, not an argument. Thanks for your input!

Sorry ! The PLUS sign should be an = SIGN!

It slipped right by me.I was simply converting OHMS to Siemens, which is conductance,a reciprocal of resistance which is very useful when measuring low resistance.

Fluke makes a variety of digital meters that measure in the Siemens range.

Sorry for the confusion. And you are correct, connections are very crucial when measuring low values.Tight connections are essential, sometimes mercury-wetted contacts are used.Depends on how much accuracy is needed.

Remember,in order to display that nice readable display value, a lot of conversions have to take place, and every stage is subject to errors of some magnitude.

As you say, there is a whole branch devoted to this single area.
