Maruti ALTO Shock Absorber Issues

01/13/2014 1:02 AM

My car has 29xxx kms run, was serviced for the steering column sound. After the service, I found that the car steering does not want to center itself when turned left. This problem showed itself due to tight steering column, which otherwise was loose/worn. When the car was left to run straight without holding the steering, it had no issues until the tyres go in a ditch. Chowgule service centre could not fix the problem.

I always doubted the left stud(shock absorber) and recently asked them to replace it with a new one. The dumb fellows did not believe me and had no ability to test drive. They changed the stud and did the wheel alignment. The idiots must have fitted the sensors on the wheel caps(I once saw this done by them) or purposely kept a right side tendency for the car so that the fault which they never believed existed, could be corrected. They never believed that the stud was faulty. I have to waste one more day for this, again.

The stud was faulty as I noticed another improvement on replacing it.

The car, when driven above 70 kmph was behaving like it was running on a rumbled road(in the front). This stopped on replacing the stud. This problem existed even during warranty and I thought it to be normal with Maruti ALTO(Indian variant) as this is my first car.

The service centre personnel believe that the stud is defective only when it makes duk-duk sound.

What could be the problem in the stud that made it behave so unstable.

The shock absorber for an Maruti Alto is an air spring damper manufactured by Hangzhou Minxing. Typical shock absorbers are hydraulic, and leave traces of leaking oil when they fail. You will not have any visible evidence if the air is leaking, but it does sound like the motion damping action has been lost. The vibration (rumbled road) you describe is typical of an undamped spring. A harmonic frequency "bouncing" of the wheel will occur at certain speeds. The vehicle not wanting to center up after a left turn leads me to think you've bent an A arm when your wheels went in the ditch. The caster angle is now too steep. The "tight steering column" sounds like the service people just over tightened the steering gear adjustment to keep the car from pulling very hard to the left due to bent suspension parts. Beware of the energy stored in the coil spring of the front suspension if you try to replace the bent parts. That spring can kill you.

Thanks for the reply.

After replacing the shock absorber, all the issues are solved. The steering does not go off centre when the tyre goes in a ditch. Earlier also, it ran straight if let go on a smooth road.

Now, I can understand the other shock absorber is showing the signs of ageing. Anyhow, it is over 5 years old.
