I'd love one too, but my hand/eye coordination and motor control is pretty much maxed out with TIG. Not to mention what the price must be!!

I will take SolarEagles demolition model please!

Actually for what I do I could have out did the laser torch guy with my old 105 amp plasma cutter. Not as clean or high tech but darn fast and precise enough for doing scrapping work. Probably way cheaper to own and run.

Back a few decades ago I was scheduled to help another safe expert open a high security vault for a diamond exchange. I was told that he needed additional help for his procedure to open this vault and would hire the help locally. And since I was already maintaining all of their other safes and vault doors I was the logical choice for the operation. What I was told was his procedure was to use a highly specialized laser to open the hole we were to going to open the door with, since the door had a piece of 6" hard plate that had to be penetrated. A procedure that would have taken days to get through, he was going to do in 1 hour (movie magic takes a lot less time). My first time with this type of field opening method. As I understand his laser was set to go out of focus and had to be refocused as we further penetrated the door, so that we would not destroy the parts that we needed to open the door on the inside. I guess he made someone really nervous with his specialized laser because he disappeared a few days before the scheduled opening. His office was vacated overnight as well as his home according to the diamond company we were working for. I guess he made someone nervous that did not want his opening procedure out there in the public domain for others to copy. Now these lasers are everywhere in the working field. Guess I will just have to wish for one. But I do agree with TCM my Hyper Therm plasma torch does a really good job for what I need. Now I use a cutting rod with air to remove the debris from the hole in safe doors.

Duke.

THIS IS GETTING OLD TRYING TO POST AND HAVING TO GO BACK AND CUT AND PASTE. Forum what is wrong, when I create a post I almost every time have to hit the return and then cut and paste to new entry. Is it a conspiracy or just me that is having this problem. The other day it deleated my post three times before I realized that I could go back and cut and paste. I almost gave up on posting comments at that point in frustration! Duke

It is not just you. Most of us suffer this regularly. If you remember, when you are about to submit, copy the whole thing, hit the back button, and then hit the reply button, paste and proceed as normal. It is related to the time it takes to type the message.

Thanks that is what I have started doing now just to save time in retyping the whole thing. You would think they would fix that aberration in the programing for time out sometimes we put a lot of effort into these posts and hate to lose all of the time to repost. Duke

Re: Hand Held Laser Welder
to transmit 5 kw over fiber, you need 5000 fibers in parallel carrying about 1w (+30 dbm) each. For example, this article

http://www.furukawa.co.jp/review/fr024/fr24_04.pdf

discuss fiber than maxes out at 1.5w (+33 dbm) optical power

I wonder what kind of fibers they use that can carry that optical power level? They must be larger diameter than any ones I've used. Or do they just run 5000 regular fibers in parallel. For some perspective, most optical power meters max out at 1 mw (0 dbm).

Nice! Sure will make building those exhaust systems with coat hangers a lot easier!

Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor, showing off his newest garage ornament.

Yep, yep, yep, that's right. Check this out Al:

Yep, this baby has 9.8 X 1023 kegajoules per cubic meter per second of spark makin', air splitting steel fusion power. Whole block goes dark when I fire it up. You can weld together an aircraft carrier in about five hours. The clock here tells the time anywhere in the world. Check this out: two cupholders. Even has headlights, in case I want to weld something at night. Arrr arrr arrr arrrrrrrrrr!
