Souped-Up Toy Cars For Kids With Disabilities

02/25/2014 4:59 PM

I am particularly interest in this because my granddaughter is in this program, she is blind and probably has Cerebral Palsy. She wears eyeglass frames to stop her rubbing her eyes, something that blind children tend to do and that can leave permanent darkened rings around the eyes. In this, they moved the accelerator to behind her head so she would keep her head up. She is in the picture below the video as well as being in it.

Whether this is engineering, design or something else, it is worthwhile.

It is my understanding that the cochlear implants for hearing are moving to vision systems. See link

It is to be hoped that with smarter input data and support hardware like physical control accelerometers etc with muscle management packages, plus AI support, that a whole lot of people can enjoy a substantially improved life.

Where I work we have just started importing these http://www.gizmag.com/go/7263/ from the U.K. into Western Australia. If the link doesn't work they are called Wizzy Bugs from the Bath Institute of Biomedical Engineering. They are specifically designed for kids with disabilities and as such have the seating and adjustments often required for these kids. They are also controlled by a common brand of powered wheel chair controller and so the transition from Wizzy Bug to a small power chair is possible with the same controller. This control system also allows for switch driving ( no joystick ) and communication devices.

She is a gorgeous little girl. I find this thread so inspiring, and wish I had the talent to

do something like this....just to make life truly rewarding and worth living (for both others and myself).
