Column Design of a Spherical LPG Tank ?

I am preparing my graduation project : " The design of a spherical LPG storage tank ". I have been searching for codes and standards to establish my design and it took me a considerable time to realize that I'm only able to design the shell and nozzle thickness with the (ASME DIV VIII UG27 / UG45 ), but the most difficult part of the design for a spherical tank is the loadings of the supports. My project include seismic,wind,rain & snow loads.

Can i use Robot auto-desk for this kinda task ? or maybe Solidworks FE especially for the stub leg zone ? what would you recommend me to use for the design of the column and the cross bracing.

I really appreciate any kind of help. Thank you

It is important for a newbie like you to understand that many ASME and international pressure vessel standards are not complete and do not address all design circumstances.

For xample, saddle support design on horizontal pressure vessels has been done in accordance with the semi-empirical "Zick" methodology developed over 50 years ago in a research paper by the esteemed L.P.Zick.

The ASME BVP Section VIII code has never incorporated this decades old methodology, yet supports and references it in many publications!

The question you ask, about the complex loading requirements of the spherical tank on the supports is in the same category..... a design methodology exists, but it is probably in use only by the vessel design and erection contractor.

Additionally, these "commonly accepted" industry standards are incorporated into expensive design software offered for sale.

I totally agree with what u said "Most of the standards do not address all the design circumstances"

All am asking is : will it be adequate to use (The load combination of ASME section VIII-2 Table 5.3 + Material allowable stress VIII-1 + ASCE7 AISC Loads formula ) and SDworks FE analysis to design the column and the cross bracing correctly. I don't know anything about Solidworks, but I think some FEA would be a good approach. Is optimizing the number of columns part of your study? The design of the columns and cross bracing (if required) should be straight forward.

Actually my project is a Little bite complicated. Optimizing the number of column is not a part of it.

The deliverable of the project should be

1-A visual basic apps for shell and nozzle thickness.

2-A detailed design of the columns and the cross bracing with considering the different type of loads

3-A fabrication file / ( Assembly and parts Drawings )

Another book that has a pretty good explanation of the subject is Brownell and Young, Process Equipment Design, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1959 Chapter 10. It is an old book but useful. Your university library may have a copy.

FEA is also a good tool but be careful with the shell element to column element interface it can be a bit tricky.
