Flourished Corrosion

03/11/2014 11:35 AM

Dear engineers,

during an inspection at Nickel factory (seaside, tropical area) I came trough this beautiful "flower" at the supports of a small belt conveyor, now to be scrapped.

As per local information, it was some 30 years old, bolt size M30.

I have never seen this kind of shape, and it seems there are involved some factors other than the normal corrosion.

Could you shed some light or hint about it?

Looks like a hot dipped galvanized nut and bolt....

Indeed they were galvanised. But why this "bursting" shape?

By the way, many thanks for such a nice pics!!

My guess would be that the oxygenation follows the crystalline inclusion structure of the steel....

Perhaps a repeated cycle of wetting, corrosion, and drying, with the dry cycle causing shrinkage and cracks and the possible condensation deposit of other minerals from sea water. Repeat for 30 years and what you see is what you get.

It was a (weak attempt at) a joke. One tap with a hammer & cold chisel will probably sort it out.

Like the heat here in Arizona. It's a dry humor.

Have you been taking photographs around our foundry effluent plant?

The fluoropolymer bolts were good if the fitters wouldn't insist on reusing them.

With the apparent advanced decay I doubt theres anything to get a wrench to bite on. Its being scrapped, they will probably just burn them off.

Generally speaking corrsion in a conductive atmophere follows the same rules as deposition, ( electro-forming) but in reverse, so the maximum rate of corrosion occurs at the minimum radius, the sharp points. The presence of other connected surfaces near the area in question also obviously affects the result.

If you look into electro-forming 'trees' you will similar natural forms, caused by minute irregularities that are amplified by the iterative process, which governs most growth be it in crystals, animals or plants. Salvadore Dali made it into an art form and sold it very sucessfully. He loved the unexpectedness of electroplating, especially gold. Nickel does it very well, too.
