Bostik "Boscoprene" cement 2402 is suitable for bonding rubber to steel. Bostik "Boscolite" primer 9252 is first applied to the steel and allowed to dry. The manufacturer should be able to advise if it is specifically suited for 316 SS.

You might try a tube of polyurethane sealant/adhesive for about 4 bucks. That stuff can be mighty amazing

Rubber compounders are a special breed of chemist... turning the raw slime into everything from bands that will stretch 20 or more times their relaxed length, to seals that withstand enormous pressures and chemical attack, to tires that roll for scores-of-thousands of miles, to rocket propellant! The Master of bonding rubber(s) to metal was ... believe-it-or-not ... (Mr.) Lord. Lord Corporation (Erie, PA) grew out of the need for rubber-to-metal engine mounts, to help our military machinery last a bit longer than it was (way-back-when). The company has evolved (joining with Hughson Chemical, among other advancements) ... and can provide a wealth of decades worth of knowledge. Visit: http://www.lord.com/

What kind of rubber are you trying to bond, and what kind of adhesion strength are you seeking?

You might try Goodyear Pliobond. The company I work for has used this for years to bond rubber to all kinds of metals including Stainless Steel.

Are you trying to vulcanize the rubber and at the same time adhere to the stainless?

If so, grit blast the surface of the SS, (keep it clean) apply Chemloc 205 as the primer coat. When dry apply Chemloc 220 and allow to dry before molding, this works with most rubbers- Natural, SBR ,Nitrile, excluding Silicones. Other Chemloc products include 250, 252X, 6254 all have proved good.

If trying to adhere pre-vulcanized rubber to SS it would still be best to grit blast the surface first to create more surface area for the adhesive. DAP Weldwood Contact Cement works good in non-critical applications especially on flat surfaces. Also check 3M's web site for your application.
