Most grounding materials sold by reputable manufacturers for the purpose of constructing a ground grid, such as copper-clad steel rods or solid copper conductors, are designed to be applicable to the broad range of soil conditions found in most localities. It is seldom that you have to stray from standard materials for this reason.

What might be more helpful to you is to understand what it is about the soil that can make proper grounding so challenging, and how the grounding conditions can be measured and tested. Check out the following link for a very useful PDF resource from Megger on this subject:

It is difficult to specify answer pointwise as it may need a chapter to be written. SO I am trying to provide some insight into the subject. The points considered are -

  1. Conductivity needed - This palays role in decision of material.
  2. The cost - which limits both material and shape.
  3. Location - plays role in deciding shape of material.
  4. Specific Purpose i.e earthing what?? Plays role in deciding in materials specs.

In tall metallic structures the structures themselves work as down conductors up to two meters above the ground, provided they are 4mm + thick.

Where you need to open frequently and might get handled/twisted i.e. where flexibility of earth connection is needed ... for example say welding sites , floating roof tank ( pontoon tanks) in petroleum installations etc - the earth connection is a wire or a cable - wire for steel and cable for copper. In software it could be braided copper strip - say flat cable type.

Gi / copper strips can be laid in side the ground or along some surface/ structure if high current passage is expected. GI plays role for strength as well . Where network length is more GI may do and for very short lengths Copper may be better.

There could be innumerous considerations like this . you may dwell further for the topic elsewhere on net.

Welcome to Planet Earth Anonymous 1. We on planet earth have a system known as GOOGLE, which most earth bound beings use, on a daily basis for searching for answers. We have beings known as Students, who use this for homework answers and others known as researchers who use Google for researching topics.

As for earthing materials I have found, from experience, a good quality length of wet string, a six inch nail and a damp sponge is of absolutely no use for earthing, however it can be used anywhere and is quite versatile. Easily transported by magic spoons and gnomes.

I also agree with Lyn. No.

It has been often found that most of think that material used for earthing will reduce earthing resistance.

It has been often misconception that copper earthing plate or rod will have lower earth pit resistance then GI earthing plate or rod.

Earthing will not depend on type of material used for earthing for details visit
