Norton/Symantec Phishing Scam?

04/24/2014 6:06 AM

How incredibly stupid is this:-

It is an E-Mail from Norton about the heartbleed virus: which looks just like a phishing scam.

I'm pretty sure it is actually from Norton, but, no way am I going to click on any of the links.

How could they have been so stupid?

OK, how smart do you think that they should be? You do not state what you believe they should have posted or e-mailed to their customers. How stupid is that?

I didn't think that you were being overly cautious...until I read that you took no further action. The first thing you can do is expand the sending address and compare it to others you've received from them. Next go to their website and do an online chat session, they're pretty good about keeping their products honest and will verify if they sent it or not.

It would be easier just to flag it as a phishing scan and let the pros take it from there.

My biggest complaint about security for the masses is they get more stupid by the year while the bad guys grow more sophisticated by the year. I don't trust these morons to protect my home computer even though I could do it for free. Norton/Symantec is a proven loser against high end malware refered to as military grade malware.

I remember back around 1990 (pre-public internet days), the company I worked for received a diskette distribution of Symantec's latest and greatest anti-virus software.

It had a virus in it!!!

I haven't bought a Symantec/Norton product since.

I have quit using Norton, not because it did a bad job of controlling viruses, but because it was uncontrollable as to when it ran. I would set timers and such, and leave my computer on, but it never ran. But the next time I wanted to use the computer, it would start a scan and the computer ran so slow, I had to get off and wait till it finished or abort and take the risk.

The other thing I had against Norton was once when there was a particularly bad virus and the CEO was being interviewed on the news. He looked very happy that the virus was there and they could fight it. I was reminded of some of the interviews of people who had been caught planting viruses. Although I don't think they have anything to do with them, I just didn't like his attitude.
