May I know in detail the process of honing & check points & If I have to use single machine for the honing of cylinders of various dia in the range of 45 to 400 mm with least change over time of the honing holder then which is the suitable machine? What are the appropriate speed & feeds of Honing? Thank you

Go to Sunnen.com. Sunnen honing machines are the answer. If you call them they will make recommendations for which machine, stones, speeds, etc. Very good people to do business with.

Dear Mr.Sarang Jamdade. It sounds like you are from India and seems to be from Maharashtra state.

I have worked fairly on honing machine selection, tools, finish etc.

Here is the information which might be useful to you:-

Machine manufacturers :- Worldwide there are reputed manufacturers like Jones Shipman,Sunner etc. The Honing machine manufacturers in India are Arihant Honing machine having brand name Arihone. There is one good knowledgable machine manufacturer named as Khushbu Enterprises,Shiroli,Kolhapur. Indian machines are also quite competant in performance.

What is honing ? :-

Process :- Honing is a supefinishing process. It is employed for cylindrical parts for superfinishing cylindrical portion. It is used for improving surface finish. The material removal in honing is always in microns.Typically 0.01 to 0.05 mm depending upon material, requirement, length of honing, geometrical tolerances.

Honing can correct geometry (ovality, cylindricity, taper)to a very small extent.

Tool :- The honing is a material removal process like grinding. The tool is honing stick or honing stone which is a tiny version of 'oil stone'. Grindwell Norton, carborundum universal are manufacturers of honing sticks. The honing stick costs about 10 to 25 INR each.It is a consumable.

Surface finish :- You can get upto 0.03 Ra surface finish. (depending upon material).

Geometry :-Ovality,taper upto 0.005 mm and cylindricity of 0.01 mm over 150 mm length. These are generally achivable limits.

Lay pattern :- It is hash pattern all along the length.

Machine range :- Yes. one can try honing sizes from 45 mm to 450 mm by same machine. This is possible because the work piece is stationary and fixed on work table. One need to change honing tool holders. Machine manufacturers however give ranges because the surface speed at 45 mm and 450 mm will obviousely have 10 times difference.

It depends on your volume. For a smaller volume and for wider tolerances one can thought of (but not recommonded).

Changeover :-The machines are equipped with 'quick change tool holders' hence tool set up time can be reduced to few minutes. Similarly work holding fixtures with quick change shall be possible.

Hope I have answered most of your questions. For youe specific quieries you may write me at suhas.gokhale@avautoindia.com or suhas.gokhale@spplindia.com
