Semantics.

All TV's are high definition these days.

In the US, at least, HDTV is commonly 720 (1280x720) or 1080 (1920x1080) resolution. The term 'Full HD' is used to denote 1080. I'm not sure what 'HD ready' means.

Whether or not it has an onboard tuner.

HD ready: no tuner (HD monitor)

Full HD: tuner included (a "TV")

That was definitely the case with my Panasonic - I got sold a bill of goods when I bought it - HD ready, then the digital came in and guess what - it didn't have an HD tuner. Sure it would accept an HD signal from my laptop, or I could buy an HD tuner to go on the cable feeding the video input to the TV.

(In case of a disaster please stay tuned to your TV. Oh, I'm sorry, just kidding - so you don't have a subscription, and the cable is down. FM/AM I guess is the last stand for free broadcasting / receiving).

There is some confusion associated with these terms invented by salesmen....Generally speaking the HD ready means that the tv will produce at least minimal HD(720) from an external HD signal source....and then full HD would produce 1080 usually with an onboard HD capable tuner....The there's the intermittent signal designated by i as in 1080i which means the picture refreshes every other frame@ 60 hz would be 30 times a sec....and 1080p designation which means the picture refreshes every frame @60hz 60 times a second, then there's the 120hz and 240hz models that refresh even faster for blur free action viewing....but of course the signal has to supplied at that rate, they used to broadcast some football games at 120hz, but I don't know if that continues or what....then you got yer 3D, yer super high def, and on and on it goes....
