Synchronization of Two Different Actuators

06/19/2007 12:29 PM

Hi Friends,

I have designed a mechanism in which I have to rotate a gear combination 90 degree for which i am using rotary actuator, Simultaneously I have to move one of the gear in vertical direction also for which I am using linear actuator.

Now I stuck with the problem of synchronization of both the actuators so that they can start simultaneously without any time lag.

Use the 90 degree rotation to turn a spiral ramp to give the vertical motion (assuming you don't need much distance...presumably jsut enough to engage/dissengage the gear?)

Or use a microswitch from one actuator to trigger or gate the second.

Put them in series in the circuit.

Use position feedback and proportional flow control valves. Program this through your PLC and you can get closed loop feedback to .001" accuracy.

This is similar to a veneer lathe with rotating spindles and the knife carriage is either on hydraulic positioning or electric ball screw feeds. For every rotation of the spindles the carriage advances by the thickness of the veneer. Spindle feedback is typically 8092 cts per revolution. Linear carriage position is accurate to +/-0.0005". Production rates are typically 10 x 8" blocks per minute, Veneer linear speed is 1200 fpm, so you see the response is very fast.

you haven't supplied enough information; what are the actuators? servo? pneumatic? hydraulic?

If they are servo based, I'd use two Allen Bradley Ultra 3000s, run one of them in "master" mode, couple the second into the first as a slave and program any profile you wish (linear, cam, etc). A PLC is too slow but will be perfect for general control.

Reliance Automax and AB's new Control Logix platforms have the capability if used properly. It is easy to get 2 or 4 msec control loops.

you can use rack and penion for both the side of actuator calculating thelenth of strokeof actuaterthis will work for u to synchronise the movement of the both actuators or u have to go for servo control system

in hydraulic or pnuematic
