Traction motor drives for fork lift trucks etc. are DC in, DC out.

If you're asking about history, yes it were. There're field rheostat, armature rheostat, multiple voltage control, ward-leonard system, ward-leonard-ilgner system, field divertors, etc. But these all utilized no nowdays VSD, no thyristor technology involved.

May be the ancient types of speed control still exist 'till now, many factors are considered to pick up one of the ancient types than modern types.

But in complex modern industrial field, I think the AC input and DC output (thyristor technology) is the best choice to fulfill the business demands. No need to explain why, right?

In addition, it's not impossible to make a speed control DC-DC because history have proved it.

I know there are several servo drives, for brush and brushless DC motors available. They are cheaper than the AC input models, because they don't have the rectifier and capacitors. What power level are you looking for?

Can you use PWM? Large IGBT's could handle it. What are you driving?
