Ring Gauges and OD for Round Parts

06/21/2007 12:44 AM

I need help to know what the maximum tolerance should be on a ring gauge (GO) used to check OD of a round part. Lets say that the tolerance of the part OD goes from 4.24" to 5.24", then, is there an standard that allows a ring gauge to be greater then 5.24" ?

from what I remember 5.24" +0.0 -10% of tolerance (ie, 5.24" to 5.14")

4.24" +10% -0.0 of tolerance (ie, 4.34" to 4.24")

Or was it 5% or mixture of the two! cant remember but I don´t think there is a standard which allows greater because it would be out of tolerance!

A pre-plate gauge would be smaller by a smidgen!

Have you looked at the ISO webpage or the BS webpage?

I was unable to see the ISO norm because I could not pay for the article. But I also was told that there is an International Gage Standards that talks about that tolerance that basically allows for a ring gage to be made to the maximum OD spec plus an specific number (in thousands of milimeters). Can some one send me one of those standards?

Thanks,

This company http://www.ypg.co.uk/content/PageServer.asp?S=433501537&C=1252&Type=G&AID=17 has an on-line calculator which works out the gauge tolerances in accordance with BS969. They also have a chart of tolerances here http://www.ypg.co.uk/documents/Tolerance%20Chart%20BS%20969%201982.pdf

We use this gauge tolerance chart for all of our rings and plugs.

When you purchase a go ring gauge it is made to a plus tolerance to the standards this is why it is a go gauge. If you were to order a no go gauge it would be made to a negative tolerance to the standards.

This is correct for plug gauges. A go ring gauge has the tolerance applied to the minus side ( + 0; - whatever). They are made this way so that it may fail a good part but never pass a bad part.

They are made with a plus tolerance to accept parts up to your specification and not above the specification. You will never ship a out of spec part because it will not fit the gauge. You can not force the material into a gauge which is smaller. Thus the saying you can not force 10 lbs. of poop in a 5 lb. hole.
