Utility Poles - Spacing on "stepping rods"

06/22/2007 1:23 PM

Can anyone tell me what the required spacing is for the iron rods on a wooden utility pole? These are the rods that are used to climb up the pole.

Thanks

I do not know about the spacing requirements, but what I know depending on where you are, there are a certain safety guidelines you have to follow. If I remember correctly If the pole is in public reach, 8' from the ground has to be clear (no access) because of the abvious reason that kids does not go up on the pole and electricuted.

Hang on (pun or double entendre?) and I'll go measure it for you......

Okay. That's three feet between step spikes on each side of the pole; 1-1/2 feet (at pole axis) between spikes on alternating sides of the pole. Okay?

It looks like you want to know more on the overhead power line installation, if you are please see the attached guide line

http://www.usda.gov/rus/electric/regs/index.htm

The other thing always you have to make sure with the "national electrical safety code" current version C2-2007

good luck

Thanks to all of you for the info.

This website is very helpful...I was looking for the REA manuals but those are not in circulation anymore. Has anyone heard or seen them?
