Learning Solid Works

06/23/2007 2:52 AM

I have started learning solid works through reading the getting started manual. However, since i am not a designer nor a draftsman, i am afraid that the techniques i learn through reading will not be enough and they will rust and be forgotten if i dont practice and use them in frequent patterns and practice habits. (that is what happened in my autocad and Pro-E skills....i learned them and shelved them then forgot them.)

so i want to ask you if you know of a good online source / site that has lots of practice examples to be used. step by step examples. this way i can practice them and keep repeating them periodically.

i know some of you will think that i am lazy or i have a weird way of learning but i have done this before alot. i learn through making things a habit.....repeating things in loops until i memorize them. it might not be the best way but i use it with things i want to learn that i dont have time to learn because they are not part of my career and hence i have to spend my free time trying to learn them from manuals...blah..blah

appreciate your help.

http://www.caddigest.com

Well in p2p sources you can find books and videos. there are similar programs like solid edge or Inventor you can find exercises and tutorials for it too.

Personally I draw all my home stuff, cd boxes, printers, speakers, mouse etc, it is entire world of stuff than you can draw . It works, If the point is just remember.

http://www.kxcad.net/SolidWorks/index.htm is another site you might want to check out. Here you can find the online documentation for a wide range of CAD and CAD related programs.

If you're new to MCAD, you should try Alibre Xpress. It's a fantastic Solid modeling application, and it's free. Go to http://www.alibre.com for more information.

You may visit this website:

http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/3DContentCentral/

to get free samples/products made by many companies and customs.

It won't give you a detailed tutorial. But, as you see, SW keeps every step the designer create the model, so you can follow these steps to finish your work.

Also, because it is an online model library, it will save you many time when you need some standard products.

Good luck!

The solidworks programming also includes online tutorials that guide you in the basic functionality of the software. If you are going to be a serious user of the program, the company lists course sites that you may be able to enroll at to learn the finite functions of SW. http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/Training/TrainingCourses.html

thanks everyone.

thank you guest.

nah i wont be a serious user. i only want to know the basics.......and improve with time. I am not in a rush. But i can design dog-legs and tie-ins with more accuracy and efficiency at offshore, if i got to learn how to use solidworks. Also for my final reports to be submitted to the client and my company, it would be more professional than drawing them by hand.

But thanks anyway. maybe if i have time i could check out some of the lessons if they are online.
