Certainly for all practical purposes an instantaneous trip is available. However, it does take time for fields to be develop, contacts to be open, and arcs to be quenched.

There's a self test you can try. It's 100% effective.

1. Energize the circuit.

2. Locate the line side and the load side.

3. Stick you tongue on the two terminals at the same time.

4. If able, record results.
