This is like asking "How much does a car cost?".

There are sooooooo many bits of information needed to answer a question such as this. Where is the plant located? Is the local labor capable of this type construction? What codes/specifications/permitting/political pressures are affecting the project?

The easy answer is.... A dollar two thirty eight!

Please provide far more information as all I can offer with this is

1 - cheapish (more than a little)

2- more expensive than 1

3 - more expensive than 2 (but less than too much)

Why do you need to know (homework assignment, confused middle manager with some spare funds)?

Try researching your question through Power Magazine (powermag.com) they routinely cite $/MW values for power plant projects in their articles.

Contact R.W. Beck and Associates in Denver and ask the mechanical design department for a range of costs. Costs will vary wildly with quality of equipment, type of fuel, type of cooling needed, voltage generated, distance to the grid.

As a thumb rule of costs as on date, for India context the costs are as given below.

1. Thermal Power Plant : Rs 40 Million Per MW

2. Diesel Powert Plant : Rs 10 Million per MW

3. Open Cycle Power Plant : Rs 17.5 - to 20.25 Million per MW

4. Combined Cycle Power Plant : Rs 30 to 35 Million per MW

5. Neuclear Power Plant : Rs 70 Million per MW

6. Hydro Power Plant : Rs 20 Million Per MW

The above is for general idea. There are lot of things related with the costs, like infrastructure, Land, Dam, disposal, Import/export cost etc. It may be seen that cost of power plant purchased from India is much competitive globally.
