You did not specify your country. I am guessing it is not America.

Certainly not America, it is far in central Africa where are living in huts made of long dry grass, it is in the west of Sudan but still we think it is nice to have some kind of energy for domestic use.

Adam,

You may be aware, too, that South Africa is also experimenting with the hydrogen economy, solar cells, fuel cells, and bio-fuels. The peoples of the whole of Africa could do well to begin working together on this. With the huge desert areas in Africa, abundant sunshine coupled with low water reserves, it is quite feasible for large solar farms to provide great quantities of hydrogen to be piped to teh more populated areas of the continent. The third world developing nations are in dire need of low cost, abundant, clean energy in order to move forward.

One recent development is a series of solar cells bonded to a flexible membrane and rolled out to the size you need. It is so flexible the Army are using it fastened to their tents, which obviously flex severely in the wind. Light and universal the company is going great guns. it is called Powerfilm, a British company quoted on the UK stock exchange, with a US parent company providing the technology for the backing film.

Standard sizes are produced

Sorry I know no more.

Rather than use solar cells for primary electric power, why not look at the SOFC which can use a large number of fuels, Methane, Propane, alcohols, and, especially, bio-fuels. Both Siemens and Acumentrics have 5 kw units tested and ready for the market place. The projected price for such units is in the $2,000 to $5,000 (US) price range and Acumentrics is projecting commercial delivery in the fouth quarter of 2007.

Also, be aware that Distributed Energy Systems has a solar cell powered hydrogen generator that would be ideal for supplying sulfur free hydrogen for use in the solar cell. The only real problem with solar or wind energy is the cost per watt and the inconsistent supply of energy. By using bio-fuels, Natural Gas, and stored hydrogen, the solar and wind energy can be stored more practically than by using batteries, even the Lithium-ion battery.

Also, for more 'green home building', may I suggest you seriously consider replacing wood as your primary construction material with steel. Custom manufactured steel homes are on the market waiting for assembly. The price is verry competitive and worried with fire, rot, and termites is virtually eliminated. A sample can be found here, http://www.heritagebuildings.com/steel_homes/augusta/2b.asp.

Note, I am not employed by any of the corporations mentioned in this post, I am retired from Parson's Engineering Corporation's Power and Petrochemical Division (SIP) with my title at retirement in 1998 being 'Principle Mechanical Designer". I am spending my retirement researching and writing articles on this subject. After all, being retired does not mean becoming a couch potato.
