Career Change?

06/28/2007 12:04 PM

As a recruiter for a Kelly Engineering Resources and as most recruiters in the technical recruiting arena we tend to discuss and ask ourselves....What does it take for a experienced engineer to decide to make a move to another company or post their resume online for viewing? As I have experienced most of the time it happens to be a company layoff or moving of the facility to another location. Besides the obvious shutdowns and relocations what would drive an engineering professional to look for a new opportunity?

Better salary, new projects, really depends on what stage in their career they are at. Demographically in the Silicon Valley many baby boomers are retiring and there seems to be less high tech skilled replacements available. So you may want to look into hiring retired people as consultants. They have the experience, more then likely they may only want to work part time or for short contracts.

Are you having problems finding qualified personnel?

I believe you are right! The talent pool is very tight with limited qualified applicants. As a recruiter we are always trying to find a way to locate an experienced engineer and help guide them to a new and better position. I recruit for full time direct hire positions and understand that the contract side would be perfect for the retired engineer or someone looking to work projects. I want to locate mid-level and experienced professionals who are serious to make that move. Comments? Thank you for your reply!

Right now, I'd make a move for more vacation time.

Ha ha ha, who wouldn't want more vacation but really all you need to do is quit.

How are you doing so far with your, I guess you can call it a survey?

You know since your looking for mid-level candidates more then likely their at the stage were their raising families so benefits like more vacation time to spend with the spouse and kids is an added plus. Retirement planning, stock options, medical and dental coverage, any kind of benefits that are family oriented should help in coercing potential candidates as long as the benefits are better then what they have now and of course the salary is greater as well.

Good luck!

What about HB1 visa imports?

Good luck!

I wouldn't call myself "mid-level" engineer, I'm more a "Senior" engineer, but I'm only 47 years old, I've done almost all of it, Design, Manufacturing, Programing of CNC machines, Quality Engineer, some Civil, but not too much, some EE as well, expert in machining and assembly, but sadly I only get 5 days vacation this year.

Wow, only 5 days! Sounds like to me you are more of a Project or Process engineer for a manufacturing facility.Correct me if I am wrong! If interested I would like to further discuss what your capabilities are (Salary, Relocation, etc, etc,) Please feel free to contact me via email at your earliest convenience. 5 days seems not enough to me...might as well be happy and get the time off you deserve.

Thank you,

What is Kelly's position on contract/consulting engineers not looking for permanent/captive employment with a particular company? And what are Kelly's experiences with engineers considering this type of employment? What are yours? And, finally, what's your take on telecommuting? Are companies moving in this direction for jobs which don't necessarily demand an on-site presence? My work, for example (Linux device drivers and internals), can be done anywhere. What is Kelly's position on this?

Salary, Full coverage Health Insurance for the my whole family decently priced, Flex time, Working Conditions, Challenging Work, and Educational benifits. I am not that demanding.

I would also add telecommuting, housing, in terms of relocation benefits, and how about this! help with financing a home in terms of a bonus for a down payment!! Maybe that is demanding but it sure would attract the best candidates don't you think?.... Or a new car!
