Wind Energy

06/29/2007 2:42 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm located in the Caribbean and in this region we have a lot of wind all year long. I have a project in mind and want to know if someone can help me out with some info. I want to built a wind turbine by using a normal car altenator and a car or truck batteries through an inverter to power up the light around my house during the night. The light capacity can varies from 5 to 15 watts. Amount of light 5~10.

That is essentially how wind power systems for liveaboard boats work. There is no shortage of fun boating people down there, I suggest you ask around for info on what they use. You might be able to get a boat system, or parts of one, cheap or for a trade.

If you want to simplify things, get rid of the inverter and run 12V DC LED lighting. It will cost less in the long run.

Hi there. I am working on a similar system as we have a fairly healthy wind in this area averaging 10km / hour about 70% of the time. The only issue I have found is the wind can change direction in minutes. Having had to repair windmills as a business for many of the outback stations in Queensland, I have found that there is a considerable amount of parts that need replacing on a regular basis mainly due to having to 'Swing into the prevailing wind'. I have come up with a design that is 'Omni-directional' whereby it does not matter where the wind blows from as the sails give a constant direction of rotation. The windmills have 10 to 20 parts whereas mine is reduced to 3 plus an alternator / pump. I have estimated that I can produce on average 2500watts of power or 1000gallons per hour to 30 foot head height.

Having said that, this unit also allows for the continuous power generation and continuous water pressure for all the household uses.

Ooooh you are a tease...

give us a clue then...

Savonius?

Vertical Axis?

Ducted fan?

Alien technology?

Basically,

It works on a vertical axis driving a brass screw gear or (mono cavity displacement) pump at the base and the top axis is part of a vertical displacement magnet and stator element alternator to adjust the output to a constant voltage with variable amperage independant of wind speeds. Water cascading to the lower catchment also keeps the axis alive to maintain rotational speeds for the power generation without spinning the sails or pumps. My scheme has approximately 7 days running from a fully loaded (dynamic energy) without wind before it would shutdown. The stored water is an energy source similar to dams used in water power generation and also is used for household purposes.

Anyone who has some physics ability should be able to design a system to suit their needs. I cannot disclose everything as some of the design is part of provisional patents as the potential for large scale power generation varies radically from existing style wind farm electrical generation technologies.

Hi everyone,

The web link I got from Guru and information from others will surely help a lot. I think I have enough information to start with my project. I will try to make it as cheap as possible so that others can use it in efforts to lower their monthly electricity bills as well.
