sharing internet connection

06/30/2007 12:31 PM

I need to configure the two of my computers at home to have a shared internet connection through a port hub.I need one computer to behave as the server and the other as a client . There's a network LAN card fixed in one of them. Can anyone help me on how to prceed? How may I install communication "protocols" to enhance LAN networking speed? I have WINDOWS XP service pack2 and have an external broadband modem.

If you have an Ethernet connection on both computers, you can hook one to the internet. If you're running Windows XP, you can find a setting among your network controls that says "Let other computers access the internet through this computer." click YES, and the other computer should be able to reach the internet, as well.

Windows should be working too. The world should be a nice place. Life should be longer and prettier. We should barter instead of rob. The whole lot should be cleared, and more meaningful. Cheers, Cat. Cheers Vermin.

You can also purchase an inexpensive firewall that will serve local IP addresses and share one external internet address. I use a 3com Office Connect (probably obsolete now), but I think Linksys and others have similar devices. That way all computers have independent access to the net.

N'ah, stiff upper lip and all that...

It all looks a bit amateurish, they'll probably get better at it...but if you had to drive a Jeep Cherokee wouldn't you want to set it alight...?

(British humour...please don't anyone start accusing me of of supporting terrorism (again!) )

About 5 years ago a local scout troop went on a "winter" camp. Total damage exceeded $100,000 CDN.

The 2 scout masters had brand new 4 Wheel drive Ford Explorers, with less than 5,000km on them. They went up a logging road and halfway up the mountain one caught fire. Apparently a fuel line came loose. The second Explorer that was in the rear turned around and went back down the mountain to get help, but slipped on a patch of ice and went over the side. It rolled several times. Meanwhile, a bulldozer from the logging company saw the fire and came to the "rescue" it proceeded to smother the fire by burying it under multiple buckets of snow and gravel.

Both vehicles were totalled, most of the camping gear was destroyed in the fire.

The boys got a special badge for the "shake rattle and burn" weekend.

Ford has a dodgy rep even here in the US. By the way Jeep is made by GM.

Anyway, I'm sure you remember the hassle between Ford and Bridgstone (?). Too many accidents involving rollovers. Turned out in the end that Ford Explorers where prone to ignoring their center of gravity and Bridgstone tires weren't designed to stand up against the extra lateral force.

Another great Ford was their van. They were causing garage fires (if lucky) and house fires all over the US. Seemed some little POS circuit board in the ignition switch assembly had high current 12 Volts running through it all the time. It heated up, then your van heated, and pretty much everything you owned heated up. In this respect, Ford vans came already well equipped for the aspiring, young, suburban terrorist with a family of five.

I use a multi port router for all 3 of my computers. All 3 computers have XP and I use the networking and sharing capabilities that are incorporated in XP to make any one of the computers accessible from another. You really don't need a server, unless you just want to name one of the computers "Server"

I also network 3 printers, available to all of the computers at any time, using the XP network capabilities. It works quite well.

I don't really know about a hub -- but a router was recommended to me years ago as the best way to go.

Re: sharing internet connection

Everyone is making it too complex!!!

You're running Windows XP, correct? And when you say you have a hub, I assume that you're talking about a small Ethernet switch (hub technology is pretty old).

So, connect both PCs by their Ethernet ports to the switch, then connect the switch to the cable modem.

Finally, on the computer that is subscribed for cable modem connectivity, just turn on the "Let other PCs connect through this PC." So, on your switch your two computers are talking to each other, and when you want to reach the Internet with the other PC, it will send it's request to the Internet PC, which will pass it on to the cable modem.

It's really that simple!!! Screw this "Oh I'd get a router or a fire wall, blah , blah, blah!"

They're all doing the same thing, allowing the other computer to connect to your Internet computer and send it's packets out through it's connection to the Internet.

When you subscribe for internet connection, your ISP will provide you with a modem (cable, DSL, or…) with an IP address.

You need a router (usually comes with 4 ports) that will connect to the modem provided using an Ethernet cable (cross-over not straight, for the router to properly communicate with the modem). Configure the router according to the instructions in the manual provided to be able to detect the internet connection. Simply connect your two (it can be up to 4 wired connection) computers (with LAN ports) to the available ports on the router with Ethernet cables (straight). Now, setup your computers for the networking and you can access the internet in any of the computers.

You might want to consider buying a wireless router instead of the wired kind. Setup is basically the same, less the cable but more flexibility.

It took 18 reply to get to the point.

Get a router, wireless one if you desire. Less then $100. Plug and play. I recommend Linksys but D-Link is good also.
