Recent UT inspection of a 6" NB schedule 40 Gr106 pipe, with heavy external corrosion, has given wall thickness measurements of between 0.3" (7.6mm) and 0.31" (7.8mm). However, clause 16.3 of ASTM A106 states that the minimum wall thickness at any point shall not be more than 12.5 % under the nominal wall thickness specified in Table X2.1. From this table for 6" NB Sch. 40 pipe this equates to a wall nominal average thickness of 0.280" (7.11mm) and a minimum allowable thickness of 0.245" (6.22mm). There is no reference within the standard to a maximum allowable wall thickness. Does this mean that the maximum allowable wall thickness is unlimited, or, does this mean the maximum allowable wall thickness is zero and only a negative tolerance applies? The inspected pipe has no un-corroded areas to take a datum measurement from and we have no historical inspection or fabricastion data. Therefore we are unable to determine the amount of material lost from the pipe wall.
