High Voltage MOV Connections

07/17/2014 3:16 PM

I need help determining a good way to connect an EPCOS S20K1000 MOV.

This disktype varistor has a short circuit voltage of 1620V.

I'm using it to arrest transients on the output of a 1400V rectifier. I have a small plastic enclosure and some 20awg wire that is insulated for 1500Vdc, but I don't know how to connect the MOV to the wire and maintain the proper insulation level.

I'd like to have something like a spring terminal so I can easily replace the MOV when it fails. But, a solder type connection would be fine too. I just haven't been able to find anything with an insulation value of around 1500V.

Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Thank you for your time!!

Shrink sleeving.

Electrical tape.

Insulating coating.

Another plastic box outside that one.

Go to your local electrical supply house (where the contractors go) and ask them for something like Scotch 130C Linerless Rubber Splicing tape, which is used to insulate high voltage cable splices and terminations. It is thick, stretchy, and "welds" to itself to make a good insulating coating. For durability, it should be covered with a layer or 2 of Scotch 33+ electrical tape, which is what electricians use for insulating household voltage level connections.

If the plastic box is large enough then there's no need for insulation to be applied. Air is a good insulator. Take each lead in at opposite sides of the box and simply solder the MOV between them.
