Material selection able to stand 200 000 psi UTS

07/02/2007 12:52 PM

I need a light material (< 2.7 g/cc) which is able to stand 200 000 psi UTS. I have to machine a circle 16" OD and 3" thick.

Any suggestion?

Have you looked into molybdenum steel? They use it for (among other things) cannon barrels.

I'd be surprised if such a material exists. Aluminium has about the right density but the strongest alloy I can find in the literature is ~ 73000psi.

Titanium max UTS I've found is 144000psi which is approaching your figure, though still well shy, and density is 4.5g/cc.

Various steels can achieve the strength but density is ~ 8g/cc.
