Generator Louvers

07/04/2007 12:35 AM

I have a project that requires our building louvers to open when one of the generators starts to run. There are 4 actuators per generator rating 120Vac 0.9 A. We have 5 generators, 3 are what we call parallel generators feeding a common bus. The other two fed their own separate bus. I was told to have this connected to a run relay located in the master control switchgear of the parrallel generator. Is this possible? Does anyone have a similar situation to this? If so, do you have a schematic diagrams showing these connections.

E-Z...Why the switchgear? Read on!!! Why not have the louver 120v control circuit connected to parrallel switching relays (1) on each of the (5) gen/sets with form "C," N.O. contacts (dry, no power switching duty only) from each of the generators. As soon as any one of the gen/sets starts the contacts will close and the louvers will open. Use utlility heavy duty relays with 10 amp contacts for long life. I'm sure the relays can be ordered or furnished by the gen/set manufacturer.

I subscribe to K.I.S.S. process.

Economy of design is! Easy does as easy goes.

The Kiss rule is GREAT.

Remember that it cost money to run equipment.

Install a thermostat with the control circuit. You

only need the fans running to remove heat. Why pay extra to move good air.

AS a Canadian who used many generators we try to save money.Yes and in the COLD winter

we sent rad. heat to bldg to get free waste heat.

A canadian KISS supporter.

KISS is good, we pratice it at all times, so I guess we should ask ROMY what these louvers are for? Cooling air? Combustion air? Or both

The louvers should be designed to allow for the air requirements for each Gen. set typical, the start contacts close, the damper motors drive the dampers open, the end switch on the damper motor closes when the dampers are fully open and starts the Gen. set. Be careful starting the Gen set befroe the dampers are open, you could collapse the dampers if the Gen, set has a large air requirement, combustion air and cooling air. You can have any Gen. set open all dampers or just the damper for that Gen. set. A simple control circuit.

If master control panel has a power on run light on it a circuit can be connected in parallel to a control relay for the buildings louvers. When generators turn on power supplied to the run light will also be applied to the coil of the relay which will open the louvers. Current draw from a small relay should not cause any problems.

You could install relays that would be energized when the diesel start switch is turned to the "on" position. We had 24 volt motors that drove the louvers on IHI container cranes and would open at the first starter switch position.
